The federal budget, released March 22, 2011 contained good news for volunteer firefighters.  Included in the budget, was
a $3,000 Volunteer Firefighters Tax Credit for firefighters who perform at least 200 hours of service in their communities.  Opposition parties are promising to defeat the budget at the Friday, March 24th vote.

Fire Chief Rob Simonds, President of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC), issued the following statement upon the delivery of the 2011 Federal Budget:

"The Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) strongly applauds the Conservative government's introduction of a $3,000 tax credit for volunteer firefighters in Budget 2011. This is a crucial measure to ensure the retention and recruitment of volunteer firefighters which will help keep Canadian communities safe.

The CAFC has been advocating for this measure for almost 10 years. Canada's Fire Chiefs now call on all parties to pass the federal budget so that volunteer firefighters get some much needed help for the essential work they do."
