New Brunswick Fire Prevention Officers Seminar 2017
The 2017 NBAFPO Seminar will be held at the Best Western Plus on Bishop Drive on Friday, April 7 to Sunday, April 9. We are very pleased to announce that John Ginac will be the Keynote Speaker on Friday afternoon. John Gignac is the Executive Director of the Hawkins Gignac Foundation for CO Education. Just prior to his retirement from the Brantford Fire Department where he spent 34 years as a firefighter and fire captain, tragedy struck. In 2008, four members of his family were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. His niece Laurie Hawkins, a respected OPP officer, her husband Richard and their two children Cassandra and Jordan all perished when a blocked chimney vent forced the deadly gas from the gas fireplace back into their home. The family did not have a carbon monoxide alarm. In 2009, John founded the Hawkins Gignac Foundation for Carbon Monoxide Education. Through public donations, a memorial golf tournament and corporate support, he administers a grant program through which he purchases and distributes CO alarms to fire departments across Ontario. He is a recognized authority on carbon monoxide safety and has conducted hundreds of media interviews across Canada. After advocating for more than five years, he was instrumental in the passing of mandatory carbon monoxide alarm legislation in Ontario – named the “Hawkins-Gignac Act” in honour of Laurie, Richard, Cassie and Jordan. John received the Order of Ontario for his dedication to carbon monoxide awareness last year. The NBAFPO Seminar Committee is finalizing the agenda for Saturday and Sunday and hopes to have it ready by the end of February. Come join us in a learning and fun filled weekend and catch up on the happenings on Fire Prevention around the Province. Reconnect with old friends and make new connections! NBAFPO Board |
